How to choose your ideal New Zealand wedding location.
New Zealand, Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud and to those who visit and reside here, absolute heaven. We are lucky to be surrounded by dramatic, evolving landscapes on the South Island and on the North. Below is a little run down of some places to tie the knot and elope in New Zealand.
Staying on the helicopter vibe, mountain landings are a very popular choice around Queenstown. With many, many locations to shoot from such as, The Ledge, Roy’s Peak, The Remarkables and many more. You can even travel further afield into Fiordland National Park or land in the exclusive Earnslaw Burn, only accessible by foot or flight. Mountain top weddings and elopements are whimsically romantic. Think beautiful views, solitude and a unique experience to hold forever.
Queenstown is home to Lake Wakatipu, carved millions of years ago by glacial movement, the lake is surrounded by grand mountains. Knowing that, anywhere you go in Queenstown, by the lake is beautiful. Areas such as Bob’s Cove, Kelvin heights, Moke Lake and Jacks point are all popular spots to get hitched, with or without a wedding party. The best thing about a lake front location is that it’s all free, however if you would like to hold a big ceremony there, you will need to let DOC know.
New Zealand’s forests and native bush is some of the oldest in the world and so luscious due to its rainforest climate and rainfall. There are plenty of woodland areas available for you to use. I’m thinking woodland fairytale with festoon lights and greenery everywhere… do you know what I mean? Some of the most beautiful forest can be found out near Glenorchy, up the Dart Valley or around Paradise, that’s right, we have a place named Paradise right on our doorstep.
New Zealand is home to a beautiful selection of churches, old and new. Take the sweet little church in Arrowtown for example with its white wooden panels and pastel blue door, it sure is a picturesque place to say I do. You can search for all local churches online.
The beaches of New Zealand are unapologetically beautiful. From the wild west coast to the long, golden beaches in the North Island, you are spoilt for choice. From Queenstown, you can opt for a helicopter flight over the Fiordland mountains to a remote location on the West Coast, there you will be totally alone on a secluded beach declaring your love for one another.
If you’re not digging the outdoor scene then an indoor venue is for you. Luckily for those wanting to marry in Queenstown you will be spoilt for choice. Queenstown is home to a whole heap of beautiful wedding venues in and around the central area. For a little Luxury the Eichardts hotel suite and balcony is perfect, giving you enough of an indoor vibe but also not lacking on the scenic views. Kinloch Lodge and The Winehouse are perfect out of town getaways that can hold an awesome indoor party. Queenstown and the surrounds are also home to a multitude of beautiful holiday homes, some large enough to hold a small wedding reception in. Here’s a Link to one I recently had the pleasure of visiting.
The courthouse is a quick and easy way to tie the knot and then spend your time getting some beautiful photos of your day in and around Queenstown. The Courthouse is located right in the centre of town, so perfect for those who may be staying close. You can also book a long lunch in town or hop in a car and drive out somewhere remote for the evening.
SO, you have picked your location, wherever it maybe you won’t be disappointed. Here are some other things to think about for your big day. If you are planning to head into the wilderness for your nuptials then consider having your hair and make-up done before you leave town, this way you will save on the travel fee from each artist. Be sure to let your guests (if you have any) know the travelling times between your intended ceremony and reception venue, group transport is also an option to remove any stress on the day.
If you are more of an indoor kinda couple for the venue, but would love to shoot some epic outdoor photos, then don’t worry. We can sneak away from the venue for an hour and find somewhere to capture your love, pretty much everywhere in Queenstown has a beautiful backdrop & I can take you to some of my secret locations too.
If you are planning an indoor wedding and require a little help to make your venue really stand out then consider hiring a stylist, they will transform any location and your vision into a dreamy day. You can check out recommended stylists here on the Queenstown wedding association website.
