Destination weddings & Elopements in Queenstown
I absolutely love the idea of eloping. Sacking off the formalities, the guest list and the logistics. Just packing your bags and jetting off somewhere exciting to say I do, just the two of you will surely provide a beautiful story for the grandkids. If you are planning an elopement then let me help you. Although the thought of running wildly through the hills, husband or wife to be in tow and not a care in the world sounds whimsically romantic, your elopement still deserves planning to make sure that you capture the essence of what your true love is all about.
First you will need to figure out where to do it. Queenstown is a mecca for elopement locations. I’m talking secret lake side spots to secluded mountain tops with no one around, meaning we can scream and shout about how wonderfully romantic your day is, without disturbing anyone but the local sheep.
There is an option for all, catering for all budgets and ensuring that you get the absolute most out of your wedding day. Below is a list of some of my all-time favourite places around Queenstown that would fit the bill perfectly.
Cornet Peak is popular for those who want to drive. Just twenty mins from central Queenstown will see you on the ski field access road. You can drive and stop along the way and have the most beautiful view of Queenstown and the Remarkables for your elopement.
Easily accessible by car & foot. Perfect for a lakeside elopement or intimate ceremony with friends and family. The track is an easy ten min walk from the car park, rewarding you with a beautiful secluded cove. Bring sand-fly spray, they like to hang out down here.
Coromandal peak (Roys Peak)
For the avid mountain lovers, Roys peak is the epitome of mountain top elopements. Unless you fancy a five hour uphill climb I suggest you Heli in. When you Heli to this location you will land at a private ridge line, meaning you can soak in all the views with no interruptions.
Easily accessible from Queenstown. If you drive then expect around 20 mins in the car. There are at least two awesome spots to stop for photographs. Flying is the most popular option, a helicopter again will take you to a secluded location, hopefully still with a snow landing. Giving you all the winter mountain top vibes.
Now this location is out of this world. Helicopter from Queenstown will take around 25 mins and the reward is worth every cent. Earnslaw burn is a secluded valley out near Glenorchy. The valley is surrounded by natural waterfalls that cascade down the rock faces. It’s a real wilderness experience, one you will never forget.
The ledge- Cecil Peak
Possibly one of the most popular helicopter locations. The ledge, on Cecil Peak provides one of the best views in town. Looking down over Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown you can explore the rugged mountain peaks surrounding, a golden hour shoot would give you the dreamiest of images.
If you’re planning to get married in the Autumn time, then Arrowtown should be your go-to destination. The whole area is an autumnal paradise, with roads covered in orange glow you literally can’t go wrong in this rustic little town.
You can drive here from Queenstown in twenty mins and spend the whole morning exploring.
For a low key affair, the Queenstown gardens provides a beautiful floral backdrop. With a pond and immaculately manicured gardens it is beautiful for a small elopement or intimate ceremony. There is even a bandstand that can be hired out for $20 from the council.
Jacks point is a popular wedding location. The club house is a beautiful mix of old and new style located right under the Remarkables. You can say I do on a beautiful wooden jetty overlooking the water and then run into the tussock filled hills for a private moment and some beautiful photos.
Glenorchy – Paradise
Actual paradise. Think mountains, tussock fields and a gravel road to a beautiful location with no other humans (apart from the ones you wish to invite that is) Expect to drive about an hour from Queenstown, you can also hire out a collection of backcountry huts from the paradise trust if you want to keep your bridal party together after the nuptials.
Multi Heli destinations
Helicopter companies offer THE best wedding elopement packages here in Queenstown. You can opt for a multi stop ride meaning you can visit more than one mountain peak and take home the best collection of images from you day or you can choose one such as Earnslaw Burn or one of the many alpine lake locations in Fiordland. Although they have set routes and destinations, custom packages are also available. There’s really no end to the adventure here.
This is another popular lake side destination. You can drive right to where you say I do and explore the rocks and pine forest at the end of the peninsula. Wilson’s Bay boasts epic mountain views and would be perfect for a small family get together to celebrate your love. The beach is made up of stones so maybe leave the high heels at home.
Queenstown wedding hire
You’re lucky that Queenstown is so set up for weddings. You name it, you will be able to hire it here. You can hire all the furniture you may need, a marquee to keep you dry and even wedding dresses and suits. Nemo bridal and couture is the place to hire any attire you may need, they also hire out warm kits if you are getting married in Winter. Queenstown wedding hire is a great place to look for all the wedding ‘things’ you may need. It is also worth contacting the planners and stylists, these women have an eye for detail and normally stock pile amazing decorations available to hire during they styling of your big day. If you’re looking to get a caterer for your intimate elopement or your wedding then The Platter Share has the most delicious selection of platters tailored for you and your taste. In 2 Food are an excellent choice for a big party and the guys over at Burrito Craft can park up their Mexican food truck for some mouthwatering food your guests won’t forget.
Queenstown is a mecca for weddings, not only hosting some of the nation’s best vendors but also boasting the most incredible locations and views.
