Queenstown photography is second to none. Trust me, I should know! I’m a local Queenstown photographer who has spent most of my life here. Which is why I would like to share with you my top five Instagram photo spots in Queenstown.
Sunset in Queenstown
Find out my secret spot to enjoy the sunset in Queenstown and how to make the most of Queenstown photography. When all is said and done, if you’re struggling to get that perfect snap, just give me a shout and I’m on hand to help.
Anyone who visits Queenstown can immediately see for themselves why it is such an excellent location for photography. The combination of rolling, snow-capped mountains, enormous lakes, and waterside settings provides all the natural cues that you could ever want. Put simply; it’s hard to find a better location for taking beautiful snaps in the whole of the southern hemisphere. It is a jewel in New Zealand’s crown.
Why Choose Queenstown for Photography?
When we think about Queenstown and photography it’s not just the scenery that’s impressive. The sheer number of photograph perspectives is too. The undulation of the land and stretches of open water make it a world-beating location for innovative photographic moments. In Queenstown, you don’t have to make do with the run-of-the-mill.
The Remarkables lookout
The city is also the sort of place you can go exploring to look for new photographic opportunities that nobody has yet discovered. Just a quick drive out of the urban centre brings you into a beautiful wilderness, unspoilt by human activity. Many visitors make their way up Queenstown hill. Which is arguably the best Remarkables lookout. Making it one of the top spots in the area for capturing images of the Remarkables mountain range. This formation that runs nearly perfectly in a north-south direction providing the perfect Queenstown lookout.
Need another Queenstown lookout? Do you want an even better view of the mountain range? I recommend heading off in the direction of Coronet Peak, several miles from Queenstown. From the summit, you can see the whole of the Wakatipu basin. Lake Hayes is in the distance, the Crown Terrace and, of course, the ever-present Remarkables. Here, you’re high enough to discern the overall formation and shape of the mountain range. As the jagged, snow-capped peaks meet the horizon.
The heart of Queenstown photography
If you’re looking for something a little less “epic,” then there are plenty of photo ops available in the environs of Queenstown too. The old port and fishing town, for instance, offers a host of quaint, secluded hideaways that provide the perfect backdrop. One great example is Glenorchy wharf. Today, the tourist and adventure industries dominate the area. However it keeps much of its historic charm, providing a semi-rustic feel. I love the sunken trees and the lake rolling off behind into the distance, providing a mysterious and eerie backdrop.
Top 5 Instagram photo spots in Queenstown
Queenstown, home to beautiful mountains, a quaint little town and scenery that Instagrammers are flying from all over the world to capture. The landscape here is so diverse that whatever you are after you will find. The lake, the mountains, the snow and the winding roads are to name a few. It would be rude to come here and not explore what Mother Nature worked so hard to give us, from full day hikes scaling the mountains to a leisurely drive out into the country you are sure to find your insta perfect picture. Here are a few of our favourite spots all accessible from the centre of Queenstown and a must do for your trip to QT. So here it is my top 5 Instagram photo spots in Queenstown:
She’s all around you, you can’t quite believe how grand the lake is until you drive out as far as Glenorchy- yep that’s still the same lake. Beautiful glacial fed lake makes for perfect photographs, the water is really that blue and your followers won’t believe that you’ve not had a cheeky edit before you upload. From getting right to the shore or experiencing the lake from above you will produce some beautiful images with enviable backdrops.
This short half day walk winds high above Queenstown centre, when you emerge from the tree’s you are greeted with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains, make sure you take a seat in the basket of dreams, pull out your best yoga pose or enjoy a peaceful moment with a view over the lake. Your Instagram will instantly feel peaceful and you will have successfully captured a small slice of what this town has to offer. Get up there before the sun rises to capture pure serenity or stay up there until the sun sets and enjoy a romantic evening with a loved one.
Road to paradise
Just a 40 min drive on the road to Paradise… Literally that is the name of the road and is a true representation of where you are about to go. On route there are plenty of places to pull over and take amazing photographs of the winding road, the bluest waters and Pigeon island. Glenorchy is a small town with that iconic Lord of the rings feel ( it plays home to a few scenes so Hobbit costumes are optional). A short boardwalk loop that leads from the car park and round will give you dramatic views of Mt Alfred and the dart river. There the red boathouse is easily one of the most instgrammed sheds in New Zealand, Sitting right next to the pier with a background of mountains, it sure does stand out.
The incredible Remarkables mountain range towers over the airport and Frankton. Pretty much from wherever you are in Queenstown you can see the Remarkables. The pointy ridge line is iconic and is also know as The Misty Mountains featuring in The lord of the rings film series. Weather it be winter or summer, covered in snow or shadow these mountains and undeniably amazing to photograph. Head out to Jacks point to get a different perspective or how about getting up there yourself. As it is home to a ski field you can drive up to the base building and explore, be careful as the seasons change as the weather and terrain can be unpredictable but the views from the top are second to none.
Somewhat a hidden gem just outside of Queenstown on route to Glenorchy. There is a small bush walk which will then bring you out to the cove… In the summer time you can’t quite believe you are in New Zealand and not an island off the south pacific. You’ll find plenty of spots to pull up a pew and enjoy the serenity of the cove. If you fancy the climb then head to the end of the track and climb the hill, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of The Remarkables and the cove below. Again stay up here until sunset in Queenstown, with some beer and friends and make all your followers super jealous of your own little slice of paradise.

My Approach To Wedding And Elopement Photography
As a proud Kiwi, exhibiting the wonders of Queenstown and the surrounding landscape in my wedding couple and elopement photography is essential. It’s an opportunity to showcase the incredible natural features of this part of the world. There’s nowhere like it.
The Queenstown Landscape
I firmly believe that the best photographs must be earned. The landscape around Queenstown certainly puts that philosophy to the test. I take couples to different locations around the Wakatipu basin and seeking out spots that capture the essence of their partnership. For me, it’s not about reusing the same tired areas, shooting a few snaps, rinsing and repeating for the next client. There’s much more to it than that. You must do something unique, find out what they’re all about, and then use the setting to complement that. You can’t force it.
Awe Inspiring Locations
Part of the joy of the work that I do is finding stunning locations around Queenstown. What strikes me about the area is how it keeps on delivering. It’s natural beauty is remarkable, but it also changes through time. The type of shots you can get when the sun is high in the sky are different from those at dusk and dawn. Queenstown’s weather can make a big difference too.
Backdrops to die for
Then there are the perspectives that you can achieve. The three-dimensional nature of the landscape provides wedding couples with backdrops that most can only dream of. It’s perfect for those who like to add a bit of drama to their photos.
When it comes to Queenstown photography, I take a relaxed approach. You’re not just a client to me. We will become friends, using our combined energy to create authentic, true-to-life photographs of you and your partner. I believe that when you’re relaxed, enjoying the moment, and being yourself, magic happens. Don’t fear I won’t shove my camera in your face, making you feel super awkward. Instead, I trot around with you, using the equipment to depict you at your best. Don’t worry you’ll love the results.
This is my back yard
I know Queenstown and the surrounding region very well. So, if you have a setting that you’d like to use as a backdrop, ask me about it. We can take a trip to the Remarkables, amble alongside Glenorchy, or take advantage of Lake Wakatipu in the evening. Don’t worry about posing I’ll give you plenty of helpful direction. We will work together to make the images look as natural as possible. At no point will anything feel forced – that’s not what I’m about. Instead, the photos will be of you and your partner having fun together. It’s all sincere and authentic.
