A Queenstown Proposal Picnic for Two

For something a little slower and more intimate, we’ll set up a private picnic overlooking the mountains or lake, ready for you to arrive and ask the big question.
Your picnic includes a grazing box for two, mini cake with a personalised “Will You Marry Me?” sign, sparkling grape juice, Antipodes water and all the little details already taken care of. A cabana can also be included when the weather plays along.
Your photographer will be waiting discreetly nearby to capture the proposal as it happens. After the yes, you’ll have time to celebrate, enjoy your picnic and take some photos together while you’re still riding that just-engaged high.
You’ll receive one hour of photography and 30 professionally edited images, ready to download, share and print.

Surprise proposal photography in Queenstown starts from $1,000 NZD, with pricing depending on the location and experience you choose.
Scenic ground proposals: From $1,000 NZD. Perfect for lakeside locations, alpine viewpoints and secluded nature spots around Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu.
Helicopter and alpine proposals: Typically $2,500 to $4,500+ NZD, depending on your chosen helicopter experience and location. Private helicopter charters can take you to spectacular remote alpine locations such as Cecil Peak, Vanguard Peak or The Remarkables.
Every proposal package includes discreet planning assistance, location recommendations and mapping, timeline coordination, photography of the proposal itself and a high-resolution online gallery.

How do you keep the proposal a secret from my partner?
Keeping the proposal genuinely secret is a big part of the planning. We coordinate everything discreetly beforehand so that, from your partner’s perspective, the day simply unfolds naturally.
For helicopter proposals: Your photographer can blend in as another passenger or tourist on the flight. Your partner won’t know who they are until after you’ve dropped to one knee and the surprise has happened.
For ground proposals: Your photographer will arrive ahead of you and position themselves discreetly at the chosen location. Depending on the spot, they may look like another tourist or simply someone out enjoying the landscape. They’ll photograph the lead-up and your partner’s reaction from a natural distance before introducing themselves afterwards for a relaxed engagement shoot.
Before the day, we’ll communicate privately by email. Your photographer will also usually get in touch via WhatsApp the day before to introduce themselves, check the weather and confirm the exact location and timing.
The aim is simple: you know exactly what’s happening, while your partner suspects absolutely nothing.
What happens if it rains or the weather changes?
Queenstown’s weather can change quickly, particularly in the mountains, so flexibility is built into the planning from the beginning.
We monitor the weather closely leading up to your proposal and, if conditions aren’t looking suitable, we can adjust the timing, reschedule or move to an alternative scenic location.
For helicopter proposals, flights are weather dependent. If low cloud, high winds or other conditions prevent your helicopter from flying, we’ll work with you and the helicopter operator on the best alternative. This may mean shifting your flight to another time or day, or changing to a beautiful ground-based proposal location.
Queenstown also has incredible options for moody or changeable weather, from sheltered forests to dramatic lakeside locations, so a change in forecast doesn’t have to mean losing the experience.
Whenever possible, we recommend planning your proposal within your first couple of days in Queenstown. That gives us a backup window if the weather decides not to cooperate.
How far in advance should I book a Queenstown proposal photographer?
We recommend booking your Queenstown proposal photographer 2 to 6 months in advance, particularly if you’re planning a helicopter proposal or visiting during Queenstown’s busiest seasons.
Summer and winter: December to February and July to August are particularly popular. Booking 3 to 6 months ahead gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date, photographer and helicopter flight time.
Autumn and spring: Around 1 to 3 months’ notice is often enough, although popular dates can still book earlier.
Planning something last minute? Please still get in touch. Short-notice and midweek availability does come up, and we may be able to create something incredible even with very little lead time.
If a specific date or helicopter experience matters to you, earlier is always better.
Can family or friends be involved or hidden nearby?
Absolutely. Family and friends can be part of your Queenstown proposal while still keeping the actual moment intimate and surprising.
For ground proposals: We can help coordinate a nearby hiding place or lookout where family and friends can wait out of sight, then join you once your partner has said yes.
For helicopter proposals: This depends on the aircraft and charter you choose. Some helicopters can accommodate additional guests alongside you and your photographer, while larger groups may be able to travel in a second helicopter and meet at the landing location.
After the proposal: Another lovely option is to keep the proposal itself completely private, then surprise your partner again with family and friends waiting at a Queenstown restaurant, vineyard, luxury lodge or lakeside celebration afterwards.

What's the best time of year to propose in Queenstown?
Queenstown is beautiful year-round, so the best season really comes down to the kind of landscape and atmosphere you want for your proposal.
Autumn, March to May: A personal favourite. Think golden foliage, crisp days, beautiful autumn colour around Arrowtown and generally fewer crowds than the height of summer.
Winter, June to August: Incredible for snow lovers. The surrounding peaks become dramatically snow-covered, creating spectacular alpine backdrops, particularly for helicopter proposals. It’s also perfect if you love the idea of pairing your proposal with a cosy fireside celebration afterwards.
Spring, September to November: Fresh, colourful and beautifully varied. You’ll often still have snow on the higher peaks while the lower landscape begins to turn green again, with longer daylight hours as the season progresses.
Summer, December to February: Ideal for warmer weather, long evenings and golden alpine landscapes. With daylight stretching well into the evening, there’s plenty of flexibility for outdoor proposals and beautiful late-day light.
There isn’t really a bad season to propose in Queenstown. The best one is the season that gives you the experience you want to remember.
