Packing for a Road trip (Pro Tips)
A journey begins with preparation. As the packing and planning builds, so does the anticipation and excitement, no less for our epic West Coast road trip through the states and into the Canadian Rockies. Our family plan to tour the National Parks such as Yosemite, Zion, Bryce, Oregon/Washington as well as day tour some of the nearby famous cities. This means we will mostly be on the road and experiencing a variety of accommodations. Including a mix of camping, Airbnbs, and Hotels. We will need to be organised and take the bare minimum. Canada means camping as its very expensive to stay in Hotels. In the hotter areas of the States, Hotels are necessary due to the heat.
Below is the ultimate road trip checklist, containing some of the best items on offer to suit the intrepid traveller, and useful items for sight-seeing in more urban areas.
Road Trip Packing List
to make the adventure that little bit easier (so you can soak up the surprises on trail!)
These make life infinitely more organised! Cells for your suitcase or backpack, these act as removable compartments making everything accessible. This also makes it easier to plan, using each compartment according to need, or day by day. Perfect as a road trip essential and great for on flight luggage, these take the hassle out of rustling through your bag trying to find that long-lost cell charger or warm jumper.
Fantastic all-round female explorer’s pack, for a road trip the Kathmandu Overland Woman’s 55L is versatile in its accessibility as it also doubles as a suitcase. The overlocking lid makes it weather proof and durable – padded EVA straps are right where they are meant to be and soften the load for those longer hikes into the wilderness. The Overland Woman’s Pack is made of gridTECH fabric, known for its reliability and longer-lasting wear.
This eco friendly drink bottle is all you need to keep your thirst under control, it’s a must for a road trip necessity through the hottest part of the USA. With a double insulation feature, your rehydration is guaranteed – even in the hottest of places. The flip top lid means the mouth piece is hygienic and easy to clean.
4: Teva Sandals
I will be using these high tech, super comfy hiking sandals for exactly the purpose they were built for. Exploring the range, you can find almost any pair to suit any adventure. The pair I will be using are perfect for traversing wet trails, like the Narrows Hike in Zion National Park – a hike through a virgin river. The water-resistant Poly webbing is ultra-soft, preventing the dreaded blisters associated with wet hikes. The Microban® zinc based anti-microbial treatment also guards against nasties which can come from damp sore feet. A Nylon shank stabilizers your footing which is ideal for uneven terrain.
A must for hiking with your toddler or pre-schooler. The piggy back rider is different to your standard hiking pack for carrying children. Allowing for more ease of use and accessibility, this product is intended for shorter stints when your child needs a break. They will love the height advantage and the safety harness means both you and your child can relax. The sturdy design functions like a typical hiking pack with your child’s weight distributed at your core area, enabling a more natural position. My almost four-year-old will absolutely love riding on her Dad’s back! Or mine even – with such a great product, both parents will want to have a go with carrying!
(So you can have the adventure, but not smell like it)
